Hair Fall After Fever, Dengue, Typhoid or COVID: Why It Happens and What to Check

हिंदी में पढ़ें →

Many people notice handfuls of hair falling a few weeks after recovering from a high fever. It is alarming, but it has a well-understood cause. Here is what is happening and what is worth checking.

You recovered from dengue, typhoid, COVID or a bad viral fever — and two or three months later your hair starts falling in clumps: on the pillow, in the shower, in the comb. This pattern has a name: telogen effluvium.

Why it happens

Each hair goes through a growing phase and a resting phase. A high fever, a serious illness, surgery, sudden weight loss or major stress can push many hairs into the resting phase at the same time. They do not fall immediately — they shed around 6 to 12 weeks later, which is why the hair fall seems to come "out of nowhere" after you have recovered.

Typical features:

In many people this type of shedding settles on its own over several months as the hair cycle resets, but the pace differs from person to person, and it can continue longer if another cause — such as low iron, thyroid problems or ongoing stress — is also present.

What to check

Do not start strong hair treatments or supplements without advice; correct what the tests show.

See a doctor if

  • You see round bald patches, or hair loss from eyebrows or beard
  • The scalp is red, scaly, itchy or painful
  • Shedding continues heavily beyond six months, or the parting is visibly widening
  • Hair fall comes with weight loss, fatigue, irregular periods or acne
  • Hair loss started after a new medicine

Gentle care in the meantime

Where homoeopathic care fits

Some people seek homoeopathic care for hair fall after an illness, alongside correcting any deficiency found in tests. The consultation looks at the illness history, appetite, sleep, stress and general health. Homoeopathic care is supportive and individualised, and no regrowth is promised. See hair fall care at the clinic.

Treatment duration and response are highly individual and are reviewed honestly at each follow-up. Please do not stop any medicine prescribed by another doctor.

Consult Dr. Meenakshi. In Udaipur: Monday to Saturday, 10 AM – 1 PM by appointment, and 6 PM – 9 PM walk-in with no appointment needed. Online consultations are available by video call or WhatsApp, with medicines couriered from the clinic.

In many people it settles on its own over several months as the hair cycle resets, but this varies. If it continues beyond six months, or other causes such as low iron or thyroid problems are present, see a doctor.

Commonly ferritin and haemoglobin, TSH, vitamin B12 and vitamin D, as your doctor advises.

Some people seek supportive homoeopathic care alongside correcting any deficiency. Care is individualised and no regrowth is promised.
