From NEET to BHMS, internship and registration, MD through AIAPGET, PhD and the careers that follow — explained by a practising homoeopath who teaches and guides doctoral research.
Students and parents often ask Dr. Meenakshi how to become a homoeopathic doctor. As an Associate Professor and PhD Guide at Rajasthan Vidyapeeth Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Udaipur, she sees this path from the inside. Here is an overview; always check the latest rules with the official counselling and regulatory bodies, as procedures change.
BHMS (Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery) is a five-and-a-half-year course including a one-year compulsory internship. Students study anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, forensic medicine, community medicine, surgery, gynaecology and obstetrics and practice of medicine, alongside homoeopathic philosophy, materia medica, repertory and pharmacy. Education is regulated by the National Commission for Homoeopathy (NCH).
After completing BHMS and internship, graduates register with their State Board or Council of Homoeopathy (and the national register) before practising. Under the NCH Code of Ethics, the registration number is displayed in the clinic and on prescriptions.
Admission to MD (Homoeopathy) is through the AIAPGET entrance examination. MD is a three-year course in a chosen subject — such as practice of medicine, materia medica, repertory, organon and philosophy, paediatrics, psychiatry or pharmacy — and includes a research dissertation.
A PhD in homoeopathy involves several years of supervised original research. Dr. Meenakshi's own MD research was on chronic sinusitis and her PhD research on post-menopausal hormonal mood disorders.
